How does the cold affect electric car batteries?

To keep the battery of your electric car in perfect condition, you must take into account factors such as charging time, how much you charge the battery, how you charge it, etc. Added to these factors is the temperature in which the battery is located, as it is affected by both high and low temperatures.

Low temperatures can affect both the range and efficiency of these vehicles. Below, we explain how cold weather impacts EV batteries and what measures can be taken to mitigate its effects.

Reduced range
EV batteries, commonly lithium-ion, rely on chemical reactions to store and release energy. When the temperature drops below 0°C, these chemical reactions slow down. This means that the battery requires more energy to operate and, consequently, the vehicle’s range is reduced. According to some studies, EVs can lose up to 30% of their driving range in extreme cold conditions.

Longer charging time

Cold affects not only the discharge of the battery, but also its charging capacity. At low temperatures, the recharging process is slower because the electrolyte inside the battery becomes denser, making it more difficult for the lithium ions to move between the electrodes. This can lead to longer charging times or even prevent the battery from fully recharging. Some manufacturers implement pre-conditioning systems that heat the battery before charging, helping to reduce this problem.

Additional energy consumption

During the winter, the vehicle’s heating system becomes a major energy demand. Unlike internal combustion engines, which use waste heat from the engine to heat the interior, EVs rely solely on battery power to heat the passenger compartment. This results in higher energy consumption, which in turn affects range.

Measures to minimise the impact

EV manufacturers are constantly working to improve battery technology and mitigate the effects of cold. Some solutions include batteries with thermal management systems that regulate the optimal temperature to maximise performance. In addition, users can take measures such as parking the vehicle in closed garages or preconditioning the passenger compartment before driving to warm both the interior and the battery.

In summary, although cold weather affects the performance of electric vehicle batteries, with technological advances and proper planning, it is possible to minimise these effects and enjoy efficient driving even in winter.
