Energy Storage to Reduce Peak Energy Demand

Energy consumption in an industrial facility is not constant. Throughout the day, there are periods when demand increases significantly, which can lead to higher costs or even penalties for exceeding power limits.

In these situations, energy storage becomes a valuable tool for managing energy more intelligently. Instead of simply drawing electricity from the grid when demand increases, a battery energy storage system can supply power during periods of high consumption and recharge when demand is lower.

One example of this application is the project developed with TERA NEO H, designed based on an analysis of the facility’s consumption profile.

The challenge: controlling consumption peaks

The analysis of the facility’s consumption data revealed a clear pattern: the highest levels of demand occurred during specific periods, particularly in the afternoon. The highest recorded peak reached 207 kW, with much of the variability concentrated during peak hours.

This represents a challenge for any facility looking to optimise its energy consumption. The goal is not necessarily to reduce the amount of energy used throughout the day, but rather to prevent occasional peaks in demand from increasing the facility’s overall grid demand.

This is where energy storage comes into play.

A battery to manage energy demand

For this project, a 125 kW, 261 kWh TERA NEO H solution was proposed, sized according to the facility’s actual consumption profile.

Its operation is straightforward: during periods of lower demand, the battery can recharge, while during periods of higher consumption it supplies power to prevent grid demand from exceeding the defined limit.

In this way, the system acts as an energy support during peak periods, reducing the need to draw all the required power directly from the grid.

Energy storage adapted to consumption

One of the key aspects of the project is its sizing. The system is not designed based solely on battery capacity, but also considers how, when and how much the facility consumes.

In this case, the analysis made it possible to establish a demand limit of 140 kW and simulate how the system would respond to different consumption scenarios.

What results does TERA NEO H deliver?

The simulation results demonstrate the potential of energy storage for managing peak demand.

With the proposed solution, peaks above 140 kW are reduced, bringing the maximum demand down from 207 kW to 140 kW. The system is also able to address the main periods of high demand without significantly changing the facility’s usual consumption pattern.

This is important because the objective is not simply to use less energy, but to use it in a more efficient and controlled way.

Even when considering the highest-demand day recorded, the system maintains sufficient energy available in the battery, demonstrating that the solution can handle the most demanding scenarios without exhausting its usable capacity.

Greater control over energy

This case study demonstrates one of the main advantages of incorporating energy storage into facilities with variable consumption: the battery makes it possible to shift energy over time and use it when it is actually needed.

The battery can recharge during periods of lower demand or when solar energy is available, and then use that stored energy during peak hours.

The result is a facility with greater capacity to manage its energy requirements and reduce exposure to consumption peaks.

From energy consumption to intelligent management

Energy storage should not be viewed simply as a battery that stores electricity. Its real value lies in how it is integrated into the overall management of the facility.

Analysing consumption patterns beforehand makes it possible to size the solution appropriately and define an operating strategy adapted to the actual needs of each project.

A solution designed for each facility

This project demonstrates that there is no single way to use energy storage. Every facility has a different consumption profile and therefore requires a solution designed around its specific needs.

At TERA Batteries, we develop energy storage solutions tailored to each project, combining BESS systems, intelligent energy management and monitoring to optimise energy use and improve the performance of each installation.
