How energy storage enables the integration of solar and wind energy

The transition towards an energy model based on renewable sources is already a reality. However, one of the biggest challenges facing today’s electricity system is ensuring that solar and wind energy, which are naturally variable, can be efficiently and reliably integrated into the grid.

In this context, energy storage has become a key element. It not only helps manage the intermittency of renewables, but also completely transforms the way energy is generated, distributed and consumed.

The challenge of renewable energy: variable production and constant demand

Solar and wind energy have a clear advantage: they are clean and virtually inexhaustible. However, their main limitation is that they do not generate electricity continuously.

Solar energy depends on radiation and only produces power during the day.
Wind energy depends on wind availability, which is variable and unpredictable.

On the other hand, energy demand is continuous and does not always match generation times. This mismatch leads to issues such as:

  • Energy surpluses that cannot be used
  • Demand peaks without sufficient renewable generation
  • Instability in the electrical grid
  • The need to rely on conventional backup sources

Without energy storage, the large-scale integration of renewable energy is limited.

What is energy storage and how does it work?

Energy storage consists of capturing energy generated at a given time and using it later when needed. This ability to decouple production and consumption is what allows the electricity system to remain balanced.

Currently, the most advanced systems are BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems), which use lithium-ion batteries and other emerging technologies to store large amounts of energy.

Energy storage performs several key functions:

  • Storing energy during periods of excess generation
  • Releasing energy during high demand
  • Regulating grid frequency and stability
  • Optimising the use of energy infrastructure

In short, it acts as an intelligent management system that brings flexibility to the electricity network.

Integrating solar energy through storage

In solar installations, peak production occurs during the middle of the day, while energy consumption often increases towards the end of the day.

Energy storage helps resolve this mismatch in several ways:

Capturing solar surplus
During peak generation hours, unused energy is stored in battery systems, preventing waste.

Energy shifting
Stored energy can be used during non-generating hours, such as at night or during demand peaks.

Optimising self-consumption
In industrial environments, energy storage maximises the use of generated energy, reducing dependence on the grid and lowering energy costs.

Thanks to these capabilities, energy storage makes solar power far more predictable and manageable.

Integrating wind energy through storage

Wind energy is even more variable than solar, as it depends on changing weather conditions.

Energy storage enables:

Managing wind variability
When wind generation is high, excess energy is stored for later use.

Ensuring a constant supply
Even when there is no wind, stored energy can meet demand.

Reducing energy losses
It prevents energy curtailment when the grid cannot absorb additional generation.

In this way, energy storage transforms a variable source like wind into a more stable and reliable one.

Tailored energy storage: TERA’s approach

One of the most important aspects of implementing energy storage systems is that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Each project has specific needs depending on its consumption, generation, location and objectives.

At TERA, we develop tailored energy storage solutions adapted to any type of project, from industrial applications to large-scale renewable installations.

This approach allows us to:

  • Design customised BESS solutions based on client requirements
  • Integrate energy storage with solar, wind or hybrid systems
  • Optimise performance and efficiency for each installation
  • Deliver scalable, future-ready solutions

Energy storage is no longer a standard component, but a strategic solution tailored to each specific case.
